## Key points

- 2 days is the minimum guided ascent: fast, demanding and with little time to acclimatise.
- 3 days lets you take a quieter route, such as the Azzaden Valley, or slow the pace.
- 4 days is the best choice for most first-timers: a day at moderate altitude makes summit day far easier.
- 6 to 7 days circles the whole massif over high passes before the summit.

The most common question we hear from people planning to climb Mount Toubkal is how many days they need. The honest answer is that it depends on your fitness, your experience of altitude and what you want from the trip. Here is how the main options compare.

## The 2-day trek: fast and demanding

The [2-day trek](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/2-day-toubkal-trek/) is the shortest guided ascent. On day one you drive from Marrakesh to Imlil and walk 5 to 6 hours to the refuge at about 3,207 m. On day two you start before dawn, reach the summit around sunrise and walk all the way back down to Imlil, a day of 8 to 10 hours.

It suits fit, experienced hikers who are short of time. Its weakness is acclimatisation: you go from city level to over 4,000 metres in about 24 hours, so headaches and fatigue are common on summit day.

## The 3-day trek: a better rhythm

Three days can be used in two ways. You can follow the same route as the 2-day trek with an extra night, so you descend more gently, or take a more varied route such as [Toubkal via the Azzaden Valley](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/toubkal-azzaden-valley/), which crosses the Tizi n'Mzik pass and spends a night in a quieter valley before joining the main trail.

## The 4-day trek: our recommendation for most people

The [4-day trek](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/4-day-toubkal-trek/) adds a first day over the Tizi n'Tamatert pass and a night with a Berber family in the village of Aroumd, at around 1,960 m. That day at moderate altitude makes a real difference: most people find the summit morning far more comfortable. After the summit you come back down to the villages rather than racing to Marrakesh.

It is the option we recommend for anyone climbing above 3,000 metres for the first time, for families with active teenagers and for winter ascents, when an extra day gives room to wait for good weather.

## The 6 and 7-day treks: the Toubkal circuit

The [6-day](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/6-day-toubkal-trek/) and [7-day](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/7-day-toubkal-trek/) treks circle the whole Toubkal massif. You cross high passes above 3,500 m, walk through remote villages, camp near Lac d'Ifni and climb Toubkal on the last morning, fully acclimatised. They suit fit trekkers who want a real journey rather than just a peak.

## Which one should you choose?

- Very fit, used to altitude, short of time: 2 days.
- Fit, want a quieter route or a slower descent: 3 days.
- First time at altitude, or you want to enjoy the summit: 4 days.
- Experienced trekkers who want the full High Atlas experience: 6 or 7 days.
- No summit wanted: a [village trek](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/atlas-mountains-hiking/) or the Imlil day trip.
