## Climbing Mount Toubkal

### How high is Mount Toubkal?

Jbel Toubkal is 4,167 metres (13,671 ft) high. It is the highest mountain in Morocco, in North Africa and in the Arab world, and the centrepiece of Toubkal National Park in the High Atlas.

### Where is Mount Toubkal?

Toubkal is in the High Atlas of Morocco, about 65 km south of Marrakesh. Every ascent starts from the village of Imlil (1,740 m), about an hour and a half by road from the city.

### How hard is it to climb Toubkal?

From spring to autumn the normal route is a hard walk, not a climb: there is no rope work, but the days are long, the paths are rocky and the air is thin above 3,500 metres. If you can hike for a full day in hills at home, you can reach the summit. In winter, snow and ice make it a mountaineering ascent with crampons and an ice axe. Read our [honest guide to the difficulty](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/blog/how-hard-is-it-to-climb-toubkal/).

### Do I need climbing experience?

No, not between April and November. You need good general fitness and the stamina for 6 to 10 hours of walking. In winter some experience of walking with crampons is helpful, and your guide shows you the basics.

### How long does it take to climb Toubkal?

The shortest guided trek takes 2 days: Imlil to the refuge on day one, then the summit at sunrise and back down to Imlil on day two. Most people enjoy it more in 3 or 4 days, which give the body time to adjust to the altitude. See [how many days you need](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/blog/how-many-days-to-climb-toubkal/).

### How long is the summit day?

From the refuge, most groups take 3 to 4 hours to the summit and 2 to 3 hours back down. On the 2-day trek you then continue to Imlil, so the whole day lasts 8 to 10 hours with breaks.

### Can I climb Toubkal in one day?

Very fit and well acclimatised hikers sometimes go from Imlil to the summit and back in a single day, but it means around 2,400 metres of ascent and descent and a high risk of altitude problems. Our shortest trek is 2 days, with a night at the refuge.

### What is the route to the summit?

The normal route follows the Mizane valley from Imlil past the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the refuges at about 3,207 m. On summit day it climbs the south cirque on a rocky, zigzagging path to the col of Tizi n'Toubkal (about 3,940 m) and follows the ridge to the summit, which is marked by a metal pyramid.

### What can I see from the summit?

On a clear morning you see the whole High Atlas, the plains towards Marrakesh in the north and the Anti-Atlas and the edge of the Sahara in the south.

### Can children climb Toubkal?

Fit teenagers who hike regularly often reach the summit, ideally on a 4-day trek. For younger children we recommend a village trek or the Imlil day trip, which stay at lower altitude. Ask us about your family and we will suggest the right trip.

## Guides and safety

### Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal?

Yes. Since 2019 the Moroccan authorities have required trekkers in the Toubkal area to be accompanied by an officially licensed mountain guide. Every one of our treks is led by one.

### What does the guide do?

Your guide sets the pace, finds the route, watches for altitude sickness, reads the weather, arranges the mules, food and beds, and introduces you to the people of the valleys. The guide has the final word on summit attempts.

### Is Toubkal safe?

With a licensed guide, the right season and sensible preparation, Toubkal is a safe trek. The main risks are altitude sickness, falls on scree and, in winter, snow and ice. Your guide turns back if the weather or anyone's health makes it unsafe.

### What happens if I cannot reach the summit?

Your guide either turns back with you or arranges for you to rest safely at the refuge while the rest of the group continues. Your safety always comes before the summit.

### Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Your policy should cover trekking up to 4,200 m, mountain rescue and medical evacuation, and ideally cancellation. Bring the policy number and emergency phone number with you.

### Is there mobile phone signal on the trek?

Signal is patchy in the valleys and on the mountain. Your guide carries a phone and knows where there is coverage, but do not count on being online during the trek.

### Is the trek suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Many of our guests travel alone. You can book a private trek with your own guide, or ask us whether other travellers are booked on the same dates.

## Seasons and weather

### When is the best time to climb Toubkal?

April to June and September to October bring the most reliable conditions: mild days, cold nights and little snow on the route. July and August are hot in the valleys but usually fine on the mountain. From November to March Toubkal is a winter climb. See our [month-by-month guide](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/blog/best-time-to-climb-toubkal/).

### Can I climb Toubkal in winter?

Yes, with the right equipment and conditions. In winter we supply crampons and ice axes and adapt the itinerary to the snow and weather. The days are shorter and colder, so fitness and a flexible plan matter more.

### How cold is it at the summit?

Even in summer the summit is often close to freezing at sunrise, with wind. In winter temperatures well below −10 °C are possible. Always bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves.

### Is there snow on Toubkal in spring?

Snow often lingers on the upper slopes until April or May, depending on the winter. Your guide checks conditions and tells you whether crampons are needed.

### Can I trek in Morocco during Ramadan?

Yes. Treks run as normal during Ramadan, and your team will make sure you have meals. It is polite not to eat or drink in front of people who are fasting in the villages.

### Where can I check the weather for Toubkal?

Our home page shows a live forecast for Imlil and the summit, based on data from MET Norway. Mountain weather changes fast, so your guide makes the final call each morning.

## Altitude and health

### Will I get altitude sickness on Toubkal?

Mild headaches, breathlessness and poor sleep above 3,000 m are common. Walking slowly, drinking 3 to 4 litres of water a day and spending more nights at altitude all help, which is why longer treks feel easier. Severe headache, vomiting, dizziness or confusion are signs to go down.

### How can I prepare for the altitude?

Choose a trek of 3 days or more if you can, arrive rested, drink plenty, avoid alcohol before the summit and tell your guide how you feel. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor before you travel.

### How fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking 6 to 10 hours on steep, rocky paths. Train for 4 to 6 weeks before: long walks with a day pack, stairs, and a few runs or bike rides a week.

### Is the water safe to drink on the trek?

Drink bottled, filtered or treated water. Your team provides drinking water on the trail, and bottled water is sold in Imlil and at the refuges. A filter bottle or purification tablets reduce plastic waste.

## Accommodation and food

### Where do we sleep on the Toubkal trek?

At the refuges at the foot of Toubkal (about 3,207 m), in shared dormitories with bunk beds, mattresses and blankets, and on longer treks in village guesthouses or camps. Bring a sleeping bag liner and earplugs.

### Are there showers at the refuge?

The refuges have toilets and showers, but hot water is not guaranteed and the buildings are cold outside summer.

### What food is served on the trek?

Simple, filling Moroccan cooking: bread, salads, soups, tagines, couscous, fruit and endless mint tea. Vegetarian and other diets are easy to arrange if you tell us when you book.

### Can I rent a sleeping bag?

Sleeping bags can usually be rented in Imlil. Tell us in advance and we will check availability for your dates.

## Gear and packing

### What should I pack for Toubkal?

Broken-in hiking boots, warm layers and a down jacket, a waterproof shell, a warm hat and gloves, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a head torch, two water bottles and a sleeping bag liner. See the full [Toubkal packing list](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/blog/toubkal-packing-list/).

### Do I need crampons and an ice axe?

Only when there is snow and ice on the route, usually from December to March and sometimes into April. We supply them in winter, and your guide shows you how to use them.

### Who carries my bags?

Mules carry your main bag between overnight stops. You only carry a day pack with water, snacks, layers and your camera.

### Do I need trekking poles?

They are not essential, but they help a lot on the long descent from the summit and save your knees. You can bring your own or rent them in Imlil.

## Getting there and practical tips

### How do I get from Marrakesh to Imlil?

Imlil is about 65 km south of Marrakesh, around 1.5 hours by road. On our treks marked "from Marrakech" we collect you from your riad or hotel. Read [how to get from Marrakesh to Imlil](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/blog/marrakech-to-imlil/).

### Do you pick up from Marrakesh?

Yes. On treks marked "from Marrakech" and on all our tours, we collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakesh. If your riad is inside the medina, we meet you at the nearest point a car can reach.

### Should I arrive in Marrakesh the day before?

Yes, we recommend it. Most treks start with an early morning pickup, so arriving the day before gives you time to rest and buy any last items.

### Can I store luggage while I trek?

Most riads and hotels in Marrakesh will keep your luggage while you are in the mountains. Travel with only what you need for the trek.

### How much cash should I bring?

Bring Moroccan dirhams for drinks, snacks, souvenirs and tips. Card payments are rare in the mountains and you should not count on finding a cash machine, so withdraw cash in Marrakesh before the trek.

### How much should I tip the trekking team?

Tipping is customary and makes a real difference to guides, muleteers and cooks. Many trekkers give around 10% of the trek price, shared between the team at the end. It is never compulsory.

### What should I wear in the villages?

Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated in the villages. On the trail, wear whatever is comfortable and practical.

## Desert and Morocco tours

### Do you run tours to the Sahara?

Yes. We run 3 and 4-day [Merzouga desert tours](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/merzouga-desert-tours/) from Marrakesh, a one-way tour from Marrakesh to Fes via the dunes, and a 2-day trip to the dunes near Zagora.

### Merzouga or Zagora: which desert should I choose?

Merzouga has the big dunes of Erg Chebbi, up to around 150 metres high, but needs at least 3 days from Marrakesh. Zagora has smaller dunes and can be done in 2 days. Choose Zagora if time is short and Merzouga if the dunes are the priority.

### Can I combine Toubkal and the desert?

Yes. The [10-day Morocco tour](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/10-day-morocco-tour/) combines the climb of Toubkal with the kasbahs, gorges and dunes of the south, and we can build a custom itinerary around your dates.

### Do you offer day trips from Marrakesh?

Yes: the [Imlil village day trip](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/imlil-day-trip/), the [Ouzoud waterfalls](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/ouzoud-waterfalls-day-trip/), [Essaouira](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/essaouira-day-trip/) and [Aït Benhaddou](https://toubkaltrekkingexperts.com/tours/ait-benhaddou-day-trip/).

### Are the tours private?

Yes. Our tours run privately for your group, with your own driver and vehicle, so you can change the pace and the stops.
