It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and its walls have appeared in many films and series. This day trip takes you there and back from Marrakesh in a single day. The road itself is a highlight: it climbs through the High Atlas past Berber villages and terraced fields to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then drops into the dry, red landscapes of the south. After Aït Benhaddou you continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, before heading back over the mountains. You travel privately with your own driver, so you can stop wherever you like for photos. ### Is this tour for you? It is a long day of around 12 hours with about 8 hours on the road, and the only walking is the climb through the lanes of the ksar. Your driver adapts it to the weather, the season and the group. ### Day 1 Marrakesh, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and back About 8 hours on the road, with stops; 1 to 2 hours on foot. Night: Marrakesh We collect you from your riad or hotel early in the morning. The road crosses the Haouz plain and climbs into the High Atlas, with stops for views and mint tea on the way up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass. On the southern side you reach Aït Benhaddou in the late morning. Cross the river and walk up through the narrow lanes, past houses still lived in by a few families and small art shops, to the ruined granary at the top for the view over the valley. After lunch in the village you drive on to Ouarzazate, where you can visit the Taourirt kasbah or see the film studios from outside, before the drive back to Marrakesh, arriving in the evening. ## When to go The trip runs all year. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In winter the Tizi n'Tichka pass can occasionally close for a few hours after heavy snow, so we keep an eye on the forecast. Dec ## Food and lunch There is no overnight stay. Lunch is not included, so you can choose where to eat; there are several restaurants with terraces facing the ksar. If you would like to stay longer, we can add a night in a kasbah hotel near Aït Benhaddou. ### Pickup and getting there The trip starts and ends at your riad or hotel in Marrakesh. If your riad is inside the medina, we meet you at the nearest point a car can reach. ## Travel tips and safety The paths in the ksar are steep and uneven, so wear shoes with a good grip. Bring a hat, sunglasses and water. If you get car sick on mountain roads, sit in front and take something before you leave. Carry cash in dirhams for lunch, drinks and entrance fees. ### Tips and money Tipping is customary in Morocco. Drivers, camp teams and local guides appreciate a tip at the end of the trip if you were happy with the service; give what feels right.
