A day on the Atlantic coast: the walled medina and harbour of Essaouira, its ramparts and blue fishing boats, and the argan country on the way.
Essaouira is a fortified port on the Atlantic coast, about 190 km west of Marrakesh. Its medina, laid out in the 18th century and enclosed by sea ramparts, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. After the heat and bustle of Marrakesh, its whitewashed houses, blue shutters, sea breeze and busy fishing harbour feel like another country.
On the way you cross the argan country. The argan tree grows almost nowhere else in the world, and women's cooperatives along the road crack the nuts and press the oil by hand. A stop at one of them is a good way to see how it is made.
In Essaouira you have free time to walk the Skala ramparts with their old cannons, watch the blue fishing boats come in, eat grilled fish at the stalls by the port and explore the souks and galleries of the medina.
This trip suits everyone, including families. It is a relaxed day with about 6 hours on the road in total and as much or as little walking as you like.
Essaouira is often windy, which keeps it cool in summer; bring a light jacket.
A sample itinerary for the Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech. Your driver adapts it to the weather, the season and the group.
Pickup at your riad or hotel in the morning and the drive west across the plains (about 3 hours), with a stop at an argan oil cooperative on the way. In Essaouira you have free time to explore: the harbour and its boatyards, the Skala de la Ville ramparts, the medina's souks and the long beach south of the town. Lunch is at your choice, from fish grilled at the port to a café in the medina. In the late afternoon your driver takes you back to Marrakesh, arriving in the evening.
The trip runs all year. The Atlantic keeps Essaouira mild in every season: cooler than Marrakesh in summer and milder in winter. The wind is strongest in summer, which makes the town popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.

There is no overnight stay. Lunch is not included, so you can eat where you like. If you would like to spend a night in Essaouira, we can arrange a one-way transfer or a 2‑day trip.
The trip starts and ends at your riad or hotel in Marrakesh. The drive takes about 3 hours each way.
The wind and sun are strong on the coast, so bring a light jacket, a hat and sunscreen. Keep an eye on your belongings in the busy souks.
Carry cash in dirhams for lunch, small purchases and tips.
Tipping is customary in Morocco. Drivers, camp teams and local guides appreciate a tip at the end of the trip if you were happy with the service; give what feels right. Bring dirhams in small notes, as card payments are rare outside the cities.

We climbed Toubkal after completing the 10‑day grand tour of Toubkal. Nothing to fault in the organisation, from the pickup in Marrakesh to the return. Everything was perfect and just as we hoped. A special mention for the excellent cooking

My four-day trek in the Atlas Mountains was unforgettable thanks to Yassin! Very friendly, he introduced me to Berber culture, its villages and its people, and showed me breathtaking landscapes, all while looking after my wellbeing and my meals. I couldn’t have done it without him! A big thank you!
