A day at the highest waterfalls in Morocco: a walk down into the gorge of Ouzoud, olive groves, Barbary macaques and a boat ride to the foot of the falls.
The Ouzoud waterfalls are the highest in Morocco: the river drops about 110 metres in several tiers into a gorge of red rock, surrounded by olive trees and fig trees. They lie in the foothills of the Atlas, around 150 km north-east of Marrakesh, and make a cool, green day out from the city.
From the top, paths lead down through the olive groves and past small cafés to the pools at the foot of the falls, where flat-bottomed boats take you close to the spray. Barbary macaques live in the trees along the gorge, and on sunny afternoons a rainbow often hangs in the mist.
You travel privately with your own driver, with as much time at the falls as you like.
This trip suits almost everyone, including families with children. The walk down to the pools and back up takes about an hour and a half in total, on steps and dirt paths; you can take it slowly.
If you would like to walk more, a local guide can lead a longer loop along the gorge.
A sample itinerary for the Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech. Your driver adapts it to the weather, the season and the group.
We collect you from your riad or hotel in the morning. The road heads north-east across the plains and through farming villages, then climbs into the hills to Ouzoud, about 3 hours from Marrakesh. Walk down past the olive groves to the viewpoints and the pools at the bottom of the falls, take a boat ride close to the cascade and have lunch at one of the terraces by the water. In summer you can swim in the pools downstream. After walking back up, the drive returns you to Marrakesh in the late afternoon or early evening.
The falls run all year and are at their strongest in spring, after the winter rain and snowmelt. Summer is hot in Marrakesh but pleasant by the water, and it is the season for swimming.
In late summer and autumn the flow can be lower after a dry year. Winter days are cooler, so bring a layer.

There is no overnight stay. Lunch is not included: the cafés and restaurants by the falls serve tagines and simple meals.
The trip starts and ends at your riad or hotel in Marrakesh. The drive takes about 3 hours each way.
The paths and steps are uneven and can be slippery near the water, so wear shoes with a good grip. Keep children close to you on the viewpoints.
Please do not feed the macaques: it makes them aggressive and is bad for their health. Carry cash in dirhams for lunch, the boat ride and tips.
Tipping is customary in Morocco. Drivers, camp teams and local guides appreciate a tip at the end of the trip if you were happy with the service; give what feels right. Bring dirhams in small notes, as card payments are rare outside the cities.

We climbed Toubkal after completing the 10‑day grand tour of Toubkal. Nothing to fault in the organisation, from the pickup in Marrakesh to the return. Everything was perfect and just as we hoped. A special mention for the excellent cooking

My four-day trek in the Atlas Mountains was unforgettable thanks to Yassin! Very friendly, he introduced me to Berber culture, its villages and its people, and showed me breathtaking landscapes, all while looking after my wellbeing and my meals. I couldn’t have done it without him! A big thank you!

About 110 metres in total, in several tiers, which makes them the highest falls in Morocco.
Yes, in summer there are pools downstream of the main falls where people swim. Swimming directly under the falls is not safe.
Barbary macaques usually live along the gorge and are often seen near the paths, but they are wild animals, so sightings are not guaranteed.
No. It is about an hour and a half down and back up on steps and paths, at your own pace.
