A superb experience for a first 4,000 m peak, full of traditions and landscapes. Our guide Yassine was great and looked after us all the way up! I recommend it!

Toubkal at a gentler pace: a day over the passes and through Berber villages first, so you reach the summit well acclimatised.
The 4‑day trek is the way we would climb Toubkal ourselves if we were visiting for the first time. It reaches the same 4,167 m summit as the 2‑day trek, but adds a first day over the Tizi n'Tamatert pass and a night with a Berber family, so your body has time to adjust to the altitude before the big climb. The result is a summit morning you can actually enjoy, rather than one you simply survive.
It is also a richer journey. You walk on old mule paths between villages, past terraced fields of barley and potatoes and orchards of walnut, apple and cherry trees. You share meals with local families, see how life works in the mountains and, after the summit, come back down to the villages instead of racing straight to Marrakesh. A final easy morning in the Imlil valley rounds off the trip.
Like all our treks, the 4‑day route is led by a licensed mountain guide from the valley, with a muleteer and mules to carry the bags and a cook who prepares every meal. You carry a light day pack and set off each morning at a relaxed hour, apart from the summit day.
This trek suits anyone who is reasonably fit and wants the best chance of a comfortable summit: regular walkers, first-time high-altitude trekkers, families with active teenagers and couples who want a real mountain experience without an extreme schedule. Walking days are 4 to 5 hours except the summit day, which is around 8 hours.
If you are very short of time, the 2‑day trek reaches the same summit. If you want to see more of the range, the 6‑day and 7‑day treks circle the whole Toubkal massif. In winter the 4‑day trek is our recommended option for a snowy ascent, because the extra day gives you room to wait for the best weather.
A sample itinerary for the 4-Day Mount Toubkal Trek. Your guide adapts it to the weather, the season and the group.
After pickup in Marrakesh and the drive to Imlil (1,740 m), you meet your guide and muleteer over a glass of mint tea. The first walk climbs gently through the village of Tamatert, with its stone and earth houses stacked on the hillside, and up to the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (2,279 m). From the pass you look down into the Imnane valley and across to the peaks you will climb later in the week. After a picnic lunch you return to the Imlil side on a different path and walk through the walnut groves to Aroumd (about 1,960 m), where you spend the night in a family guesthouse. This first day at moderate altitude is the start of your acclimatisation, and it is a lovely introduction to village life.
A relaxed start takes you across the broad riverbed below Aroumd and up the Mizane valley, the main route to Toubkal. The path climbs steadily past small summer cafés to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2,310 m), where you stop for lunch. In the afternoon the valley opens out and the trail zigzags above the tree line to the Toubkal refuge (about 3,207 m), which you reach after about 5 hours of walking. The rest of the afternoon is free to rest, drink plenty of water and look up at the slopes you will climb in the morning.
Summit day starts with an early breakfast and a climb by head torch up the scree of the south cirque. Thanks to your first two days, the altitude usually feels easier than on the 2‑day trek. You reach Tizi n'Toubkal (about 3,940 m) and follow the ridge to the summit (4,167 m) around sunrise, with views across the whole High Atlas. After descending to the refuge for breakfast, you continue down the valley to Aroumd, where a hot shower and a celebratory dinner with your hosts are waiting.
The last morning is an easy walk through the terraces and orchards of the Imlil valley, with time to visit a village, buy walnuts or argan oil, or simply sit in the sun. After lunch in Imlil you drive back to Marrakesh, arriving in the afternoon.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best seasons for the 4‑day trek, with mild temperatures, long days and green valleys in spring or golden light in autumn. July and August are hot in the valleys but generally fine at altitude, with the occasional afternoon storm.
From December to March the route is snowy above about 2,500 metres, and the summit day becomes a winter climb with crampons and an ice axe. The 4‑day trek is a good choice in winter because the extra day lets your guide choose the best weather window for the summit.

You spend two nights in a family guesthouse in Aroumd and one night at the Toubkal refuge. Guesthouses are simple and welcoming, with shared or private rooms, blankets, hot showers and meals served in the family salon. The refuge has dormitory rooms with bunk beds and blankets; bring a sleeping bag liner, earplugs and a head torch.
Meals are home-cooked Moroccan food: fresh bread, salads, soups, tagines of vegetables, chicken or beef, couscous, seasonal fruit and endless mint tea. Vegetarian and other diets are easy to arrange if you tell us when you book.
Every departure of the 4-Day Mount Toubkal Trek starts in Imlil, a mountain village at 1,740 m at the head of the Mizane valley, about 65 km south of Marrakesh. We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakesh in the morning; the drive takes around an hour and a half, crossing the Haouz plain and climbing through Tahanaout and Asni, where a big Berber market is held every Saturday, before the road follows the river up to Imlil.
If you are flying in, Marrakesh Menara airport is about 20 minutes from the medina, so most people arrive the day before the trek and spend a night in the city. If you are already in the mountains, for example staying in Imlil, Aroumd or Ouirgane, we can meet you there instead. Tell us where you are staying when you book, and we will confirm the pickup time the evening before.
The gentler start of the 4‑day trek is the best protection against altitude sickness: sleeping a night at around 1,960 m before going to the refuge helps your body adapt. Even so, drink plenty, walk slowly and tell your guide if you feel unwell; descending is the cure for anything more than mild symptoms.
Your guide is licensed and trained in mountain first aid, checks the weather every day and decides whether conditions are right for the summit. Travel insurance covering trekking to 4,200 m and evacuation is essential.
Tipping is customary in the mountains and makes a real difference to the guides, muleteers and cooks who look after you. As a rough guide, many trekkers give around 10% of the trek price, shared between the team at the end of the trip. It is never compulsory; give what feels right for the service you received.
Bring Moroccan dirhams in small notes for tips, drinks and snacks bought on the way, and souvenirs in the villages. Withdraw cash in Marrakesh before the trek: card payments are rare in the mountains and you should not count on finding a cash machine.
Tick items as you pack. Your list stays saved in this browser.
