The trek

The 7‑day trek is the complete Toubkal experience: the full circuit around the massif plus an easy first day in the Imlil valley to settle in, meet the team and start acclimatising. It is the most relaxed way to combine remote villages, high passes, Lac d'Ifni and the summit of Jbel Toubkal in one journey.

The first day is deliberately gentle. You arrive in Imlil, walk to Aroumd and back through the orchards and spend the night in the valley. From day two you follow the classic circuit east and south around the massif, crossing Tizi Likemt and Tizi n'Ouanoums, staying in villages few trekkers see, and climbing Toubkal on the final morning when you are well acclimatised.

Transfers from Marrakesh are included at both ends, and the whole trek is supported by a licensed guide, a cook and mules that carry the bags, food and equipment.

Is this trek for you?

This trek suits fit walkers who want the full circuit with a softer start, travellers who have never been at altitude and anyone who values time to enjoy the villages rather than rushing through them. Walking days are 5 to 7 hours on mountain paths, with two passes above 3,500 metres and the summit on the last morning.

You do not need climbing skills between late May and October, but you should be comfortable on rocky ground and scree, and happy to walk several days in a row. Regular hikers, runners and cyclists usually find the pace comfortable; if you are less active, a few weeks of preparation with long walks and stairs will make a big difference.

If you are short of time, choose the 6‑day trek, which follows the same circuit without the first easy day. If you prefer to avoid the high passes, the 4‑day trek reaches the summit from the Imlil side with nights in a Berber village.

Where you sleep and what you eat

You stay in a guesthouse in Imlil, village gîtes in Tacheddirt and Amsouzart, camps at Azib Likemt and Lac d'Ifni, and the Toubkal refuge. Tents and mattresses are provided for camp nights; bring a warm sleeping bag.

    Getting to Imlil from Marrakesh

Every departure of the 7-Day Mount Toubkal Trek from Marrakech starts in Imlil, a mountain village at 1,740 m at the head of the Mizane valley, about 65 km south of Marrakesh. We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakesh in the morning; the drive takes around an hour and a half, crossing the Haouz plain and climbing through Tahanaout and Asni, where a big Berber market is held every Saturday, before the road follows the river up to Imlil.

If you are flying in, Marrakesh Menara airport is about 20 minutes from the medina, so most people arrive the day before the trek and spend a night in the city. If you are already in the mountains, for example staying in Imlil, Aroumd or Ouirgane, we can meet you there instead. Tell us where you are staying when you book, and we will confirm the pickup time the evening before.

    Altitude and safety

Seven days of gradual altitude gain make this the gentlest way to acclimatise for the summit. Your guide watches the group closely and adjusts the pace on the passes.

Your guide carries a first-aid kit and a phone and knows the evacuation routes from each valley. Travel insurance covering trekking to 4,200 m and evacuation is essential.

    Tips and money

Tipping is customary in the mountains and makes a real difference to the guides, muleteers and cooks who look after you. As a rough guide, many trekkers give around 10% of the trek price, shared between the team at the end of the trip. It is never compulsory; give what feels right for the service you received.

Bring Moroccan dirhams in small notes for tips, drinks and snacks bought on the way, and souvenirs in the villages. Withdraw cash in Marrakesh before the trek: card payments are rare in the mountains and you should not count on finding a cash machine.
